Who I am:

I am a Registered Psychologist in Calgary who is passionate about helping people find the right career path. I have helped thousands of clients make career decisions with courage and confidence, and based upon solid rationale for why they are making the right choice.

What I do:

I operate from a short term, solution focused, strengths based approach with career counselling. A first meeting is about an hour long where I get to know you as an individual, and what you’ve done over your lifetime both in and out of work, as everything is interrelated. If you have any ideas on what you’d like to pursue, I’d love to hear them, and if not, then career counselling is the place to discover these answers. Next, I have you complete four tests online at your convenience.  Then we get together for a second appointment which is two hours in length. This is where I interpret your testing for you, I tie the reports all together so it makes a big picture for you, and I link it to everything I learned about you as a person, so it makes perfect sense from your life and your perspective.

What sets me apart from other career counsellors in Calgary

  • I have a PhD which involved a lot of research relating to careers.
  • I have taught career theory at the graduate level to many students over the years.
  • As a Registered Psychologist, you can submit your receipts for career counselling to your extended medical plan or health spending account (and to your partner’s plan too), and it is also a tax deductible medical receipt on your income tax return.
  • Many of my new career clients are referred to me by former career clients who were very happy with the career counselling process.
  • Also, with my training with personal issues, I am able to address all your concerns simultaneously.

Career Counselling FAQs

How many sessions does career counselling take?

Typically 3-4 hours and 4 tests work really well for people.  Some people may benefit from more sessions if they require further clarity with their career decision, if they are looking at various educational routes, or need to overcome any obstacles standing in their way for their career success.

When should I consider career counselling?

There are many opportune times across your lifespan to consider career counselling. These include when you are in high school, when getting close to completing a college or university program, when feeling dissatisfied with your work, when getting laid off, when considering a career change, and when getting close to retirement.

Why is career counselling so important?

The world of work has changed more quickly in the past few decades than in any other period in history. For the majority of people starting on a career path, many of the occupations they will hold over their lifetime haven’t even been invented yet due to changes in technology, demographics, and globalization. Given that career choice has become more complex than ever before, having career counselling with a professional is more important than ever before.

Can you direct bill for insurance?

Most insurance companies have you submit your receipt for payment. And most insurance companies are quick to reimburse you, so often you’ve been repaid before your credit card is due (if paying by credit card.)

How much does career counselling cost?

Testing is $80 each, and fees are $200 an hour. The overall cost of career counselling is generally less than the cost of one course. It is truly a great investment in your future.

What types of payment do you take?

You may pay by cash, cheque, credit, debit, or e-transfer. A receipt is issued for reimbursement through your insurance.

What are the tests used for career counselling?

The four tests I use are a career personality, career interests, career values, and career conflict scales. All have high validity and reliability, and provide a wealth of information for your career counselling process.

What does career counselling do for people?

Career counselling is a very positive, enlightening, and empowering experience for people. It helps people make sense of why things aren’t working for them, and what would be a better fit. It improves people’s confidence in their decision making abilities, and offers goals with a plan of action moving forward.  The self-awareness that comes from career counselling helps not only with career choice, but can enhance all aspects of one’s life.

Dr. Susan MacDonald Ph.D., Calgary Career Counsellor:
Some people ask me how I became interested in helping people find the career path that’s right for them. Like so many people, I found myself in a career that didn’t seem right for me. Work seemed like a struggle, and I found my career uninteresting and uninspiring. I knew I needed to make a career change, but was unsure what to do, or which direction to head. I attended a career workshop, which involved career testing, and a series of exercises to interpret my test results. What I discovered wasn’t something new, but really reaffirmed who I was as a person, and the steps I needed to take to utilize my talents to the fullest. Thus I began my journey to become a psychologist, which is where I happily find myself today. I feel fulfilled and completed by the work I do, and the people I help.

Calgary Career Counsellor Dr. Susan MacDonald and Dave

career-planning-calgaryA student came to me for career counselling – I’ll call him Dave. He was in his last semester of engineering, and completely worried about his future. He said he never wanted to be an engineer, but it was an expectation that was put upon him by his father, who was an engineer who owned his own consulting firm. His Dad’s plan was that Dave would become an engineer, and eventually take over his Dad’s company when he retired. As his graduation loomed closer, Dave knew he couldn’t bear to continue down this road.

We decided he would complete some career testing, including a personality test, a career interest inventory, and a career values scale. The next week we met again, and I interpreted his reports for him. There was a dramatic shift in his outlook on life – Dave went from feeling hopeless, helpless, and trapped – to elated, excited, and bursting with happiness. For the first time in his life he had embraced who he really was, and he felt so completely validated by his test results. Dave was not meant to be an engineer, in fact he seemed to be the furthest thing possible from being an engineer. Through our discussions, I came to find out that Dave had always dreamed of becoming an actor. It was something he has never shared with anyone, as it seemed like an impossibility, and one that could never become a reality. In all the career work I have done, Dave was the first and only client who literally jumped up and down in joy – he had truly found himself!

His next concern was how to break the news to his Dad. We did some strategizing and coaching around this issue, as he was really worried about telling his Dad he was changing his career plans. Dave returned the next week, grinning from ear to ear. He told me he had sat down with his Dad and had a conversation about his hopes and dreams. He said their talk went really well, and he discovered his Dad would support him with whatever career decision he made. Dave was so relieved to have his Dad’s encouragement behind him.

Dave had also looked into many acting programs and schools. He had researched many possibilities, and was making plans to speak to the admissions people, and gather more information. Dave decided he wanted to attend the Julliard School in New York – one of the most prestigious performing arts schools in the world. He was so determined and inspired! With an acceptance rate of 6%, he was undeterred and went to New York for an interview and audition. Not only was he accepted, he was given a scholarship to attend. Dave’s lifelong secret passion was about to be fulfilled!

Calgary Career Counsellor Dr. Susan MacDonald and Curtis

calgary-career-counsellor-300x228Curtis was also a university student in his fourth year of school. He came to see me not for career counselling, but because he was suffering from debilitating depression. He could barely get out of bed most mornings, and his attendance in class was poor to non-existent. He found it extremely difficult to write papers for his courses, and even when he was able to produce a paper, he often had no energy to submit the papers to his professors.

We began to explore the underlying causes of his depression. I was curious about what he wanted to do when he finished university, and we looked at strategies to help him pull through to the end of the semester. At first he seemed to draw a complete blank when thinking about the end of his degree, and where he was going to go after the completion of university. He seemed devoid of plans or direction he’d like to take in life.

One day Curtis shared with me his lifelong hope to become a police officer. Yet his negative self-talk seemed to stop him from seriously considering this profession. He was so self-critical, and had so many reasons why he would never be accepted into the police force. All his negativity seemed to be effectively stopping him from living his life to the fullest.

Curtis seemed to make strides in addressing his depression, and went on to graduate. I never knew what happened to Curtis until one day about five years later I was driving to the university to teach a course. Along the way I ran into a traffic jam, as there appeared to be a fender bender causing the tie up. As traffic crawled along, I approached the scene of the accident, and saw the police had arrived. As I noticed one of the constables at the scene, I did a double take: There was Curtis attending to the accident, looking so professional in his police uniform! That was one of my proudest moments ever.

If you or someone you know is considering making a career decision for the first or last time, or anywhere else in between, I highly recommend career counselling to help you on your way to success.
